Mothers, Oceans, Mirrors

This work is the beginnings of an exploration of two foreign women, unknown to each other becoming mother and daughter, one Japanese, the other Puerto Rican. The series is one that examines identity, culture, language and family. The cultural acceptance to this contrived “familial” arrangement, and the possibility whereby the participants become a real type of family. I wish to illustrate the complex beauty within this formation of identity. Through photographs and filming of our daily living together, it is my hope I will show a shared experience between us both, eclipsing language and cultural barriers. This work is about the pulse of our humanity when we strip ourselves down.
